Mohammed Rahman has a simple goal: to make STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) accessible for families who don't always see themselves represented in science spaces. To get young people learning about science through creativity and hands-on learning that stays with them and encourages curiosity.
So what happens when a child’s questions spark a movement? That’s one of the stories Rochdale’s own Mohammed Rahman explored in his talk at the Manchester Lit & Phil (Literary and Philosophical Society) on Thursday 16th October 2026.
As the founder of the Rochdale Science Initiative C.I.C (RSI), Mohammed has spent years building a grassroots network that brings science into everyday spaces and meets people where they are - schools, community centres, places of worship, and beyond. His flagship event, the Rochdale Science Extravaganza, has grown from a small local gathering into a major celebration of STEM, drawing thousands of attendees and volunteers from across the borough.
In this conversation, Mohammed shared how RSI works to make science feel relevant and welcoming, especially for families who might not often see themselves reflected in traditional science spaces. From nurturing young talent to collaborating with museums and universities, to being recognised by the British Science Association as a community role model, RSI’s approach is hands-on, inclusive, and deeply rooted in community.
This year’s focus on climate change highlighted the initiative’s commitment to practical, hopeful engagement. It offered insights into how the team finds speakers, secures support, and keeps events multilingual and family-friendly - all while staying true to their mission of turning curiosity into confidence.
