Christmas should be a time of joy, but for thousands of children across the UK, it’s a reminder of what they’re missing. For many, that means no presents under the tree - not even something as simple as a book.
Nearly half of UK children leave primary school struggling to read, and poor literacy skills can impact their confidence, education, and future opportunities. Research shows that children who own books are six times more likely to read above their expected level - a small difference that can change everything.
This December, the Big Give Christmas Challenge aims to deliver over 21,000 books to children in twelve of the UK’s most disadvantaged communities. These books aren’t just gifts - they’re tools for learning creativity, and brighter futures.
Through the Place Programme, schools also receive year-round support for literacy, wellbeing, and career opportunities, ensuring long-term impact beyond the festive season.
Here’s the reality: 1 in 11 disadvantaged children in the UK don’t own a single book. You can help change that. From 2nd to 9th December, every donation you make through the Big Give will be matched, meaning your generosity goes twice as far.
Together, we can make sure thousands of children unwrap the magic of reading this Christmas.
